Review: Plan your escape route from Fox's newest 'Prison Break'

O h for heaven's sake — die, already. Immortality is generally not a pressing problem in the real world, where death tends to be both unavoidable and permanent. But increasingly on TV, dying has been reduced to nothing more than a temporary inconvenience. Most often it’s departed series making an unwelcome return, with every surprisingly well-revived show such as  The Flash  countered by five all-too-easy-to-predict creative duds. We'll go with  Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, The X-Files, Charlie's Angels  and  Uncle Buck,  but really, you could find five others with very little effort. In case you haven't noticed, that resurrection act also includes characters. You have  Game of Thrones’  Jon Snow and  Arrow’s  Sara and (sort of) Laurel — and good luck keeping trac...

War for the Planet of the Apes review 2017

A fter almost 50 years, nine movies, a television series and a couple of video games, you might wonder just how much more gold can be mined from the   Planet of the Apes   franchise. The answer, my friends, is plenty – especially when you have ever more mind-boggling, eye-popping special effects and motion-capture technology to bring to the primate party. Pitting conflicted ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) against the ruthless human army kingpin Colonel (Woody Harrelson) in an epic battle that promises to determine the fate of both their species,  War for the Planet of the Apes  is arguably the best film yet.   ...

What to watch now that 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 is over

➽  Game of Thrones  Season 7   went out with a bang (well, actually ice dragon fire and an avalanche), but that might not be enough to tide you over until   Season 8 . The final season of the HBO juggernaut doesn't have a start date yet, and since it takes a while for the series to be produced (those dragons take time), we aren't expecting to find out the results of Dany and Jon's night of passion or the Night King's assault on the Wall for awhile. But while there’s nothing quite the same as  Game of Thrones , there are plenty of sh...

10 movies you absolutely must see this fall, from 'It' to 'Wonderstruck'

'It' (Sept. 8) Stars:  Jaeden Lieberher, Bill Skarsgård, Finn Wolfhard Director:  Andy Muschietti ➤The skinny:  The first month or so filming the  Stephen King adaptation  was full of hanging out and riding bikes for Lieberher and his kid co-stars, with a few emotional scenes here and there as the bullied outsiders known as the Losers' Club in Derry, Maine, circa 1989. But once they met Skarsgård done up as Pennywise, the preternaturally evil clown haunting the town, Lieberher realized he was really in a horror movie. “It was pretty terrifying just being in the room with (Skarsgård) in his makeup and costume, just the way he walks and the way he talks.” Just as freaky? When Lieberher's character Bill Denbrough, whose stuttering is “a symbol for his fear,” comes face to face with his dead younger bro...
